2 Carreira da Índia
The roundtrip Portugal-India-Portugal voyage during the16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, in the age of sail. Undoubtedly the longest and most arduous of all such sea voyages by sail during the age of European expansion, the Carreira da Índia, including a stay in Goa, Portuguese India, lasted about a year and a half; its scheduling was conditioned by tropical winds, including the Indian Ocean monsoon. The first Carreira da Índia, in effect, was Vasco da Gama's pioneering voyage of 1497-99. Subsequent annual India fleet voyages lasted until the age of steam in the 19th century and were even longer than the similar Spanish voyage, Car-rera de Filipinas, the annual voyage of the Manila galleon across the Pacific to Mexico (1565-1815).The Carreira da Índia, which began with the voyage from Portugal to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, and on to western India (Goa), some six or seven months on the way out, with a return voyage of a similar length, covered 9,000-10,000 miles one way and was subject to complex tides, winds, and other weather conditions resulting in numerous shipwrecks. The timing of the India fleet's departure from Portugal was based on the timing of the southwest monsoon, which begins in western India in early June. India-bound fleets left Lisbon, therefore, in time to round the Cape of Good Hope in July, in order to reach Goa by September. The ships on these trade-oriented voyages were usually carracks or galleons of increasingly greater tonnage. Outward-bound fleets included from seven to 14 ships, while homeward-bound fleets often had only half that number. Built often of Indian teak or European pine or oak, the India fleet's ships carried several thousand persons on board. As this seaborne empire aged, however, recruiting skilled, experienced crews of sufficient size was increasingly a problem. There is a significant early modern literature in Portuguese that treats the subject of India fleet shipwrecks and related tragedies. -

On a Spanish-American ranch or hacienda, the owner's home. According to Adams, this is where "all the hands gathered for fun and frolic." Bentley notes that it was without exception painted white and generally had a large veranda along the entire front. He also indicates that it was the "hub of the universe" for the laborers of the ranch. Although this term was more common in earlier times, it continues to be widely recognized in the Southwest. Santamaría says that a servant or laborer of a ranch or hacienda refers to the owner's home as the casa grande or casa principal.3) Clark: 1840s. Clark glosses it as "an extensive pueblo in the Southwest." Not referenced in Spanish sources, but common in toponyms in the Southwest and Mexico: Casa Grande, Arizona, and Nuevo Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, for example. -

18 adobe
(Sp. model spelled same [aðóβe] < Arabic at-tub 'the brick')DARE: 1759.1) Sundried brick made of clay, straw, and water.2) A structure, usually a house, made from the same material.3) Clay suitable for fashioning such bricks. The first definition is attested to in the DRAE; Santamaría confirms the usage of the second in the Southwest, providing the example "She lived in her old adobe," also noting that the lot or grounds on which such a structure was to be built could be referred to as "an adobe sole." ( Sole, according to the OED, is an obsolete term meaning "the foundation of a building; the site of a city, etc.") Spanish architecture was also greatly influenced by the Moors who introduced styles and materials now intimately associated with the Southwest.4) As an adjective, several English sources note that the term denotes Mexican origin and usually connotes inferiority. For instance, the Mexican dollar or silver peso was called a "dobie dollar," or "dobie," for short. Cowboys were familiar with adobe as building material on the ranches and haciendas where they worked. Cowboy English is the source of the expression dobe wall listed below, according to Bentley, Adams, and Watts.5) Hendrickson's contention that adobe is the model for doughboy (military personnel) is not supported by any of the sources consulted. See the OED for possible etymologies. Doughboy is attested, however, by the OED as slang for (1). Common compounds: adobe brick, adobe block, adobe house.Alternate forms: adabe, adaube, adaubi, adobey, adobi, adobie, adoby, 'dobe, 'dobie, dob, doba, dobbey, dobby, dobie, doby, dogie, doughboy. -
19 buffalo
West: 1848. The North American bison ( Bison americanus). According to Watts, Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca was the first to apply erroneously the Spanish term búfalo to the American bison because it was similar in appearance to the Indian or African wild ox or buffalo. The buffalo played an important role in the exploration and settlement of the Old West. According to Josiah Gregg ( Commerce of the Prairies), it was a primary source of meat for early expeditions. It was also widely hunted by Indians for its meat and hide. As a result of the animal's importance in the Southwest, the term, originally applied by the Spaniards, became highly integrated into English. This is evidenced by its use as a verb (first referenced in English in central Texas in 1896), meaning to frighten or confuse (or, by extension, to strike on the head with the barrel of a gun), as well as by its use in more than thirty compounds that refer to Southwestern plant life (buffalo berry, buffalo clover, buffalo pea) and animal life (buffalo fish, buffalo wolf). Some compounds containing buffalo also pertain to the history of the Southwest: "buffalo cider" or "buffalo gall" was a liquid found in the buffalo's stomach that could save a thirsty explorer, "buffalo fever" was the excitement felt at the onset of a "buffalo hunt," and "buffalo wood," "buffalo fuel" or "buffalo chips" referred to dried buffalo manure, used to start fires. Santamaría and the DRAE both point out the erroneous use of búfalo in North America to refer to the American bison.Alternate forms: buff, buffler, bufler. -
20 cantina
(Sp. model spelled same [kantína] < Italian cantina 'wine cellar, wine shop')1) Watts: 1875. In the Southwest, especially Texas, a saloon or tavern; a Mexican wineshop.2) According to Watts, "a pocket of a mochila." Blevins notes that the Pony Express used mochilas with pockets, or cantinas, to carry mail.3) Southwest: 1844. A saddlebag or other container hung from the saddle. Blevins references cantina as "a leather box packed by a mule."Alternate form: cantiness.4) Watts: 1942. A receptacle used to heat liquids; a coffeepot. This definition is similar to the English canteen, a tin or wooden container used to hold water or liquor used by travelers, soldiers, or workmen. It is unknown whether this meaning derives from Spanish or whether the Spanish term has been extended to be synonymous with canteen. The DRAE gives several definitions for cantina, among them a shop where liquor and other provisions are sold; a box made of wood, metal, or cork and covered with leather and divided into various compartments for carrying food; and (especially in Mexico) two squarish leather bags with lids that are hung from either side of a saddletree, similar to the more antiquated alforjas. They are used for carrying foodstuffs. Islas and Santamaría concur with the definitions in the DRAE, with a few exceptions. Islas indicates that the bags may be round or square, they hang from the cantle rather than the saddletree, and they are used to carry all sorts of provisions for the rider, not just food. He also mentions that the term is generally used in the plural. Santamaría notes that the cantinas have replaced the older alforjas, árganas (wicker baskets used as packsad-dles), and cojinillos (another name for saddlebags, these were generally bags or small wicker baskets). Cobos states that in New Mexico and Colorado a cantina can be either a bar or tavern or a large wallet or leather box. None of the Spanish sources consulted concurred with senses (2) and (4). Perhaps (2) is an extension of (3), and (4) did not come from Spanish but was later used as an alternate term for the English canteen.
